Norwich Castle: Royal Palace Reborn is National Lottery Heritage Fund project that will reinstate the Norman floors and rooms in the Keep and, for the first time, enable access to five floor levels. New displays and activities will immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of Norwich Castle during its heyday as a royal palace. As part of this project, we are creating a tapestry in the Bayeux style to hang in the new Keep. The tapestry will be stitched entirely by volunteers.

Volunteers are also creating lavish furnishings, such as cushions, woven table runners, wall hangings, banners, and costumes for visitors to truly immerse themselves.

What's involved?

If you would like to get involved in this exciting project, there are a few areas where you can get involved:

  • Add a stitch or two to our community panel- the largest panel of our tapestry which is being completed with the help of members of the community (events for this TBC).
  • Get involved in one of our textile projects, such as helping to make children’s costumes or play mats.

You can give us as much or as little time as you can offer.  If you just want to attend one of our community panel events, or want to help longer term.

Why get involved?

This is an exciting community project that will enable you to be part of something special which will be seen in the castle Keep or many years to come.  Whether you want to help us by adding a few stitches to our community panel, take on and be part of the creation of some of our textiles, or help us to share the project with the wider community, we’d love to hear from you.

What you will get from it:

  • The chance to be part of a major redevelop project
  • Experience of Bayeux style embroidery
  • Being part of a team
  • Experience within a museum setting and of public engagement
  • Support and supervision

How to get involved?

  • Sign up or Log in
  • You will need to complete an expression of interest form . From this we can evaluate which part of the project you would be suited and you will be asked to complete an application form and provide references.

  • There will be an informal interview and potential volunteers will have opportunity to attend a session and meet other volunteers before committing to the role.
