FAQs

What happens after I've accepted a challenge?

There are instructions for each challenge.  Once a challenge has been accepted and an application form completed (if needed) a member of the Norfolk Museums Service team will be in touch within 7 working days to arrange a chat about the role and to explain the next part of the process.

I want to volunteer but none of the current challenges are the right fit. What should I do?

Keep an eye out for new challenges- new ones will be added! When you register with us, select your skills and interests to make sure you get an email notification when a role that might suit you is added.

Will Norfolk Museums Service need references?

We ask for references for most in-person roles, but not always for short term, one-off roles or ‘other ways to support us' challenges. Each role will specify if references are taken. If you apply for more than one role, you will only need to supply references once for the Museums Service. We advise you give us referees you are happy for us to contact and that they are happy for their details to be shared with us.

What training will I need?

This will depend on which challenge you've accepted. Mandatory Information Security and Data Protection training will be required if the role involves use of our computers.

All in person opportunities will include an induction and specific training related to the role.

Will I need a DBS check?

Some of our roles do require a DBS check. This will be made clear in the role description. We will carry out the check and there will be no cost to you. We also accept the DBS update service if you are registered on this.

Will I have to have an interview?

Some of our roles do require an informal interview either in person or over video call. A member of the team will tell you more about this when you accept a challenge.

How much time will I need to give?

This depends on which role you are interested in. Our opportunities will include details on commitment in the role description. Have a think about how much time you are able to offer and choose your role accordingly!

How old do I need to be to volunteer?

This depends on the challenge you have accepted. It will be clear on each opportunity the age requirements for that role (if there are any).  Our work placements are usually for Year 10 (age 14/15) and 16 and over.  We aim to offer a selection of roles to cover all ages.

Does Norfolk Museums Service pay volunteer expenses?

Unfortunately, we cannot cover volunteer travel expenses for most roles. If a role/project does offer travel expenses this will be made clear in the description. If any role requires specific PPE or equipment/supplies to undertake the role, this will be supplied to you.

Can I volunteer if I claim benefits?

If you are in receipt of benefits, including means-tested benefits, you can volunteer for as many hours as you wish, if you continue to keep to the rules or conditions for getting that benefit.

I'm not a UK citizen, can I still volunteer?

You can volunteer if your immigration status allows it. If you're an Irish citizen, an EU/EEA citizen with settled or pre-settled status, a refugee, or an asylum seeker you can volunteer.

I have a disability; can I volunteer with Norfolk Museums Service?

Yes! Some of our sites are, unfortunately less accessible than others, but it will be made clear on each role if there are any access issues.  A member of the team will also be available to discuss any extra support/access needs with you when you accept a challenge.

Can I volunteer with Norfolk Museums Service if I don’t live in Norfolk?

Yes! Some of our challenges can be done from anywhere in the world! We will offer digital roles and opportunities as well as in person opportunities.

Is Norfolk Museums Service part of Norfolk County Council?

Yes! We are part of the Community and Environmental Services at Norfolk County Council (you can find details in 'About Us'). You will notice all our policies, procedures and forms are from Norfolk County Council and you will be covered by the NCC liability insurance whilst volunteering on-site or at events with us.
