We are looking for people to join our engineering team, who assist with the maintenance, upkeep, presentation, interpretation and running of the working machinery kept at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, particularly the Farmers Foundry Steam Engine.
An interest in engineering or experience in engineering or steam engines would be helpful but not essential.
Other skills required:
- Patience and a methodological approach
- An understanding of the aims of the museum in preserving machinery
- Ability to work outside in varied weather
- Ability to carry out hard physical work
- Team-working skills
- Ability to follow protocols and an appreciation of health and safety
Engineering volunteers meet on Tuesdays, between 9.30am-1pm, at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, with some volunteering at weekend events (approximately 5 Sundays per year).
What's involved?
Volunteers will help us with the following tasks:
- To assist with the maintenance of the working machinery, particularly the steam engine.
- To run the machinery, including steam-powered engines, at events, following health and safety protocol
- To research, source or make new parts as required.
- To present information on the working machinery to the public.
- To work on restoration projects, ensuring any alterations are agreed with the museum curator or conservator.

We have a wonderful community of volunteers who support Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse. In this role you would be part of that community and could either share your current engineering skills, or gain more experience in this field, working closely with others.
You would also get experience of working in a team and working in a museum environment.

This role does not normally require a DBS check. If volunteers begin to lead groups or work with school or community groups more a DBS check may be required.
