Norfolk Collections Centre

Each year our Collections Centre based at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse has a deep clean for us to monitor, conserve and care for items held in our collection.

Our collections centre is our largest collections store and houses objects from across NMS not currently on public display. It is important to conserve and monitor our collections to the highest standards and our annual deep clean enables to do this. We are looking for volunteers to support our collections and conservation team with this task between May 11th-21st 2026.  Volunteers can offer as many or few days as they are able to during this time.

What's involved?

Details of role:

Here is a brief overview of the types of work you will be asked to help with:

• Object cleaning (including mould removal)
• Assessment of objects for pest infestation.
• Preparation of objects to be frozen for pest treatment.
• Improving object storage.
• Object handling and movement
• Documentation (location control etc.)

Skills required:

You do not have to have prior experience as training will be provided and you will be paired with team members

• You will be required to wear suitable footwear (safety boots if you have them- or sturdy/practical footwear if you don’t)
• Suitable clothing will be required (clothes you don’t mind getting dirty). Although Tyvek suits will be available to use if you wish to.

Training provided:

• Induction including health and safety briefing each day
• Conservation cleaning
• Object handling

Other details:

• Lunch is not provided- there is a café onsite but no shops locally.
• This role is available for over 18’s only.
• There is plenty of parking onsite. If you do not have access to your own vehicle, transport from Dereham can be arranged.

This role is located at the Collections Centre, based at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, Gressenhall, Dereham, NR20 4DR.
